Owner John Michenfelder grew up with a green thumb in Chatham County. His passion for landscaping, his attention to detail and his eye for high quality custom work have been cultivated from a young age. Some of his earliest memories are at Mich Gardens, his parent’s nursery in Apex, NC, where he was first introduced to horticulture when he started working as a young teen. He went on to receive his degree from Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, NC, while completing an internship at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA. He has a Plant Professional Certification and is a Licensed Landscape Contractor with the State of North Carolina. John is happy to have made his permanent home back in central North Carolina, where he and his wife Abby are raising a family along the edges of Jordan Lake.

John has spent more than two decades in the green industry, developing ideas and creating unique and beautiful outdoor spaces for his clients. He established the White Oak Group after identifying the major industry gap between grass-mowing-only companies and custom, high quality design-build companies. White Oak Group closes that gap. He remembers watching his Mom and Dad greet each customer as an old friend, asking about their families, remembering exactly which plants and accessories they used in the past to help maintain their customer’s gardens for years at a time. As a small business owner, John has that same relationship with each client. He promises personalized, one-on-one time at the start of each project to fully understand all aspects of his client’s vision.  He provides an honest, hardworking and reliable crew that is committed to getting every detail exactly right.
